Flavour of the Month – Oct’12 October 2, 2013

Never underestimate the mind – it can be your greatest ally, or your worst enemy. And today – as I worked on something that is so unbelievably long outstanding that the embarrassment over the oversight actually made me physically sick – I was reminded of the above in all it’s glory. At one point, I had panicked so bad about the potential backlash that my mind refused to string my thoughts together to even form a plan of action. It took me awhile to force myself to calm down, get a firm hold of my rebelling mind and really focus on resolving this snafu.

I just hope I can do the same when I do speak to my supervisors about this problem. And because this is cropping up so close to my workplace performance evaluation, it will certainly be there to haunt me…but fingers crossed, it won’t derail all the good work I have done in the 12 months before this.

Wish me luck!!

The Middle

Hey, don’t write yourself off yet
It’s only in your head you feel left out or looked down on
Just try your best, try everything you can
And don’t you worry what they tell themselves when you’re away

It just takes some time
Little girl you’re in the middle of the ride
Everything, everything will be just fine
Everything, everything will be alright, alright

Hey, you know they’re all the same
You know you’re doing better on your own, so don’t buy in
Live right now, yeah, just be yourself
It doesn’t matter if it’s good enough for someone else

It just takes some time
Little girl you’re in the middle of the ride
Everything, everything will be just fine
Everything, everything will be alright, alright

It just takes some time
Little girl you’re in the middle of the ride
Everything, everything will be just fine
Everything, everything will be alright, alright

Hey, don’t write yourself off yet
It’s only in your head you feel left out or looked down on
Just do your best, do everything you can
And don’t you worry what the bitter hearts are gonna say

It just takes some time
Little girl you’re in the middle of the ride
Everything, everything will be just fine
Everything, everything will be alright, alright

It just takes some time
Little girl you’re in the middle of the ride
Everything, everything will be just fine
Everything, everything will be alright, alright

Kinabalu: Motivational Songs July 18, 2012

This was such a strange aspect of my climb that i just had to single this out as a separate entry.

Another valuable piece of advice mad4manu had shared with me was to carry my iPod with me to help pass the time. Fill it with songs to motivate you, she had said. And so I did – carry it with me that is, but I didn’t use it. Firstly, it wasn’t fine tuned for the specific purpose of this climb (in other words, I didn’t have the time to compose a specific playlist) and secondly, I didn’t want to get my iPod wet from the intermittent showers that had presided over Mt. Kinabalu.

Instead, the little DJ that was in my head quickly stepped in on behalf of my iPod. And perhaps overzealously too…for every STRAY thought that entered my mind seemed to have triggered this little DJ to play SOMETHING.

Some of the songs probably make sense, seeing as how I lean more towards pop music but most of them I myself did not expect to be in my arsenal for overcoming adversity. Let’s see if this makes you laugh as hard as it has befuddled me…

Smurfs: The Happy Song (to be honest, it was actually only the first line that kept repeating in my head)

Wheels on the Bus (OK, so may be not exactly this version – but you probably get the drift without actually having to click on the link below)

Higher

Que sera sera (in EXACTLY this version, mind you)

Fighter

On Top of Spaghetti (actually, I kept on starting with “On top of Old Smoky…” but I could only ever remember the rest of the lyrics from this parody version!)

Slow

And if you are wondering whether I missed anything out, I assure you that is not the case and that these same few songs had seemed to be compiled into a running playlist! I’d find myself humming the same (and the least expected) tunes over and over again (Wheels on the Bus and Que Sera Sera were the top hits).

Now its not to say the little DJ’s song choice had missed the mark. On the contrary, it helped me get through a 6km ascent in 6 hours. I suppose what the song choice does go to show though – and my family and friends probably know this all too well – is exactly how strange I can get sometimes!

30-Day Song Challenge: Your Favourite Song This Time Last Year May 30, 2012

Good Life: I had trouble figuring out what is my favourite song currently, much less a year back! Having said this, I searched for the top 40 songs last year and this was my pick as the favourite lot of that. It appealed to me at the time, because after a year of crazy $hit, things were finally turning around professionally. 🙂

Teenage Ninja Turtles: There were actually so many different theme songs of cartoons to choose from, but this was the only one which truly sounded like a song – complete with chorus! What surprised me in my quick research, was that Chuck Lorre (genius behind Dharma & Greg, Two and Half Men and my personal favourite, Big Bang Theory) actually co-wrote and sang bit parts of the 1987 original. How cool is that? And just to prove how cool this song really is, included below is a link to David Choi’s jazz cover version of it.

Sorry Blame It On Me: Seriously…how can you not feel like that or at least wonder if there’s anything you should be apologising for, when the word ‘guilty’ and ‘sorry’ keep popping out throughout the song?

The Blues: Out of all of Elton John’s songs I’ve listened to while a kid, I’ve always thought this would be such a cool song to play. It’s simple enough to play on an instrument. At the same time, there’s just enough of a beat and edginess to the song without even the need for lyrics. 🙂

Hot Cross Buns: This was not a hard one – cause the only instrument I’ve ever learnt is flute and even that, I only took flute lessons for less than a year when I was in the US. While I did manage to play more complex pieces, but this is probably the only thing I can play now (provided I ever get my hands on a flute again). However, it was harder though to a find a ‘just-nice’ video to go with it…hehe…

The Saga Begins: Lyrically speaking, this song tickles the sci-fi fan in me so much! This probably is one of Weird Al’s best parodies. It’s not too over the top and actually sounds quite normal.

I Hope You Dance: I’ve loved this song since the first time I heard it. It made me feel warm, secure and loved…as well as reminded me to strive to be a better person and reciprocate those exact feelings to others. If that’s not how I’m remembered as in this life, then at least it’s a comforting enough song to those I love. 🙂

30-Day Song Challenge: A Song That You Want To Play At Your Wedding May 23, 2012

I Do: By helping a variety of my friends with their own weddings, I found this gem of a song. It’s a testament how perfect I think this song is that I’d want to play it at my fictitious wedding. This is considering that unlike some women, I had never even as I child, given much thought about getting married.
