Happy 11th Birthday, my dearest Caching! Too much has happened leading up to this milestone, a whole lot more than any adult, much less a little girl, should have to bear.

It’s bittersweet, to see your parents struggling – sometimes missing the mark completely – to live up to your needs and provide you comfort, but at the same time, you have shown to be remarkably resilient.

I hope you know how immensely loved you are. You have so much more to teach us, so stay faithful and keep up the good fight, for we are and will always be by your side.

Just got back from Wen of WenWay’s CNY open house today…and while her open house has never failed to serve good food and fun times, this year though, it was all that…added with a healthy dose of romance, complete with a semi-pro choir and homegrown paparazzi!

My heartiest congratulations to WenWay for taking their relationship to the next level! *WhOO HoO!* It’s always something extra special, extra romantic when it involves childhood or teenage sweethearts. *^_^*

xoxoxo to you both!

Relationships: The Male View January 7, 2010

You know you’ve hit a friendship milestone when you, as the lone girl, spend nearly 3 hours with 3 of your ‘single’ guy friends at a outdoor hawker centre talking in earnest about relationships – engagements, marriage, having kids, one night stands and long distance relationships…in that exact order (admittedly, our discussion devolved towards the end).

I am amazed at our conversation because, although I’ve known them, an average of about 7 years (the earliest of whom I’ve known for 10), our get-togethers have always been on the superficial level. Always talking about what we did or sharing hilarious tales or experiences, never anything truly personal. So trust me when I say I was pleasantly surprised at the conversation. Not only was it enlightening to have picked the male brain, but it made me see them just a little bit more clearly than I ever did before. So what are the broad truths I learnt?

1) If males marry to procreate, then females marry to nurture.
2) No matter how much they may love the atmosphere and talk endlessly about the hot females there, most males do not expect to find their future life partner at clubs.
3) Like female, males also tend to have, what I’d call ‘superficial’ no fly zones – most popular amongst males seem to be dating older females or taller females.
4) Males don’t compete, they just benchmark themselves against each other.
5) The description ‘a handsome, nice, rich, Chinese boy’ is in itself, an oxymoron. If he’s handsome and rich, he’s almost certainly not nice, neither would he be a ‘boy’ anymore.
6) The ultimate nightmare for any single, red-blooded man would be for ALL his future kids to be hot girly-girl daughters.

Thanks for the refreshing new insight, guys! And yes, I’m aware that the views of 3 27-year-olds are not representative of the world’s male population, but still, I’ve gotta start somewhere in understanding men. 😉 I’ll be looking forward to when each of you turn 30, 30 and 32 years old. Here’s to the last man/woman standing!

P.S. – I’m nearly a week late in saying this, but…Happy New Year 2010 to all!

Have A Merry Little Christmas

Have yourself a merry little Christmas,
Let your heart be light
From now on,
our troubles will be out of sight

Have yourself a merry little Christmas,
Make the Yule-tide gay,
From now on,
our troubles will be miles away.

Here we are as in olden days,
Happy golden days of yore.
Faithful friends who are dear to us
Gather near to us once more.

Through the years
We all will be together,
If the Fates allow
Hang a shining star upon the highest bough.
And have yourself A merry little Christmas now.

Amid all the weddings I’ve been attending (that’s 3 more ceremonies tomorrow and the day after), the Yuletide celebrations have been one of the furthest from my mind. But that’s been completely reversed today thanks to my young colleagues – one who’s been looping Christmas songs constantly and another who loves Christmas so much she drew impromptu Christmas pictures for a couple of us. So much that I’m posting this during my last 15 minutes at work on Christmas Eve.

Merry Christmas, everyone! Enjoy the holidays…in my opinion, we thoroughly deserved it!

Colours of the Ribbons October 24, 2009

I was out having breakfast today with mad4manu when our conversation swerved to awareness ribbons and its meanings. Being from the pharmaceutical industry, she had heard of more colours than me and that got me curious as to exactly how many colours of awareness ribbons were there.

According to Wikipedia, because it is common for support groups to adopt their own awareness ribbons, thus similiar diseases to sometimes are represented by multiple colours or vice versa, thus leading to at least 20 different awareness ribbon colours!

Here are just a snapshot of the different ribbon colours and causes:

Red – HIV or Aids
Green – Organ donation
Pink – Breast cancer
Yellow – Suicide
Puzzle-design – Autism
Blue – Child abuse / Sex trafficking
Sky blue – Prostate cancer
Purple – Religious tolerance
White – Violence against women
Silver – Brain disorders
Gold – Childhood cancer
Teal – Gynaecological cancer

Of course, it doesn’t hurt to ask about the cause behind the ribbon the next time you are asked to put one on as nothing is internationally accepted, save for the green, red and pink ribbons I think. Even better, it’s such an easy way to learn more about a cause.

Solved: My brain itch for today!

Try Hard To Love Him July 14, 2009

Yesterday was suppose to be the day Michael Joseph Jackson showed them all. But instead of waiting for Youtube postings of snippets from his ‘This Is It’ tour, here I am instead scouring Youtube for his best videos and writing a tribute for one of the world’s most beloved musical artists of all time.

michael_jackson.0.0.0x0.400x317

Initially, I wanted to write a something detailed enough to reflect the complex person that was the King of Pop – his successes, his trials and tribulations and of course, his generally beautiful character. But in the wake of his sudden death on 25 June 2009 and despite the sombre and yet tastefully executed public memorial, there has been too much being said out there – the fate of his estate, the custody of his children, his family’s reported lashing out at ‘too many’ unscrupulous people who leeched off of MJ, his life-threatening insomnia, etc.

All the drama for a man the media had done such a thorough job of persecuting that he was never whole again. All these pointless endeavours and pathetic displays of respect that serve to benefit him least of all. The logic of how sharply the media backpedaled astounds me, even up to this day. Al Sharpton, a family friend of the Jacksons and American civil rights activist has also observed the same and had questioned where was all the support during Michael’s molestation trial? Although man may never forget what is done to them, man will almost certainly forget what they did to others.

So instead, I will remember Michael Jackson for the musical genius that he was. He had a beautiful way of blending serious issues with inspiring music. He was the master of imagery. Take ‘Earth Song’ for instance. Can you honestly say after watching this video clip, that you don’t feel the slightest bit embarrassed for all the destruction humankind has caused?

But that’s not to say MJ didn’t have fun. My favourite video is ‘Remember the Time’ because not only was he good looking (watch out for the moment at 5:21 when he smiles), he seemed to be having so much fun!

But if there was only one video to remember him by, my choice would be ‘Childhood’. It sums him up so perfectly, I cried watching this recently and thinking about what he went through in all his 50 years. There’s this line in the song, ‘Before you judge me, try hard to love me’.

When I was an adolescent, my mom once told me that MJ’s songs were evergreen. His music simply appealed across the ages. You could play any of his songs 27 years down the line (case in point: Thriller was born the same year I was) and still it can sound like the latest hit. While I knew his music simply appealed across the ages, nothing drove the point home more effectively than seeing my normally hyperactive six-year-old cousin glued to the seat to watch his AWESOME 1995 MTV performance.

Thank you for the music, Michael, not only for the generation before me and the generation that is me, but also for the future generations who will undoubtedly find as much joy in your work as we did. May you finally rest in peace. Nobody can touch you now.

RIP, THY June 13, 2009

All Those Yesterdays

They say you can’t hold on
To time when it’s gone
But somehow I’ve saved
All those yesterdays

And they’re bittersweet
Every memory
Back when we both made
All those yesterdays

Threads of hope and sorrow
Wind around our hearts
While we’re waiting for tomorrow
It’s all those yesterdays
That make us who we are

Just know I won’t forget
The laughter or regrets
No, you’re never far away
You’re all those yesterdays

Threads of hope and sorrow
Wind around our hearts
While we’re waiting for tomorrow
It’s all those yesterdays
That make us who we are

They say you can’t hold on
To time when it’s gone
But somehow I have saved
All those yesterdays
All those yesterdays
Baby it’s ok I have
All those yesterdays
All those yesterdays

Although I’m in the U.K. all the way away from home, I had to take five minutes out to blog about this. Got the crushing news via text that my cousin who had been battling cancer, despite a full hysterectomy and subsequent chemotherapy, succumbed at 7++am, Malaysian time, to a regrowth. Pending radiotherapy, an MMMT tumor grew from her cervical cavity up to be the size of a football in addition to another sizeable one that grew nearby. That’s two tumors that took over her entire abdomen.

My only regret is that I’m not there to help out the family with all the arrangements, which I’m sure they are probably doing fine without me. It’s eerie to think I’m here, in her city – the place she lived for more than 10 years – right now. She had only returned to Malaysia for a visit, but which ended up to be her last trip home. My love to you, my dearest Huey-Huey Jie-Jie. It was a helluva fight! You defied doctors 1000 times over with your spirit and determination. I wish we had gotten to know each other better. Perhaps in our next life.

Birthday Wish – 29 March 2009 March 29, 2009

The birthday shout out this time around goes to my beautiful cousin sister, who was born 6 months, 1 day younger than me. Although it wasn’t love at sight when we finally met one year later (the famous family story is that at least once, she sunk her baby incissors into my rotund limbs), we spent much of our childhood as besties. Strangely enough, we grew apart when we were teens although we ended up in the same school…BUT as women in their mid-twenties, things have definitely improved.

To my dearest Lil’ Cous, a woman as physically stunning and trendy as she is generous, as evidenced by allowing me to share her 40% staff discount, wishing you a very Happy 26th Birthday! Wishing you much love and happiness…and also, a big promotion soon! Sourcing for cloth in Hong Kong and China now…fashion shows in Italy, France and New York tomorrow!

Ox-picious ‘Niu’ Year January 26, 2009

Wishing all Chinese out there, a very Happy and Ox-picious ‘Niu’ Year! Usually, the characteristics of the zodiac year is associated with the ruling animal. And although the ox is associated with possessing a slow pace and involved in constant heavy labour, hope you will also find some (if not then, a majority of the) time to graze in the green fields.

Take a page from my book. Granted this happened last year, during the Year of the Rat. As we all know, it’s a looong Chinese New Year holiday this time around, partcularly for those who can take the 3 working days off to get a consecutive 9 days off! I am one of such lucky people…though I had a lot to finish off before I left office (courteous of the industrious Rat Year). In fact, so busy was I that I actually FORGOT to apply for leave. It only occurred to me right after the last of my seniors, who had stopped by my workstation to happily wished me happy holidays, had left the office at 7.30pm! *KuanG!* *KuAng!* *kuANg!*

Talk about a ‘blonde’ moment. 😛

2009 Resolutions January 1, 2009

Hello 2009!

So here it is, folks…day 1 of 365. Sounds exhausting, no? Hehe…to be brutally honest, there’s nothing quite as spirit shattering as coming to terms with the fact that just as you weren’t looking, life had officially closed that magical wormhole to your carefree days. Suddenly you have car and study loans to pay, meeting sales targets, being stationed overseas for work for long periods of time, etc.

One can get pretty bogged down with the grim reality of it all, and lose track of what the university-going version of you wanted to achieve as a working adult. Before you know it, a year has passed with nothing very significant achieved. I can say this confidently because, heck, that’s what I’ve been going through for the past two years. So how do I break the vicious cycle of having squat direction?

Well for starters, I have decided to make some New Year’s resolutions which I haven’t done in ages. Not only that, but I’m putting the resolutions up here for all to see. I have no doubt my bestest buddies will constantly and (somewhat) affectionately keep me on the right path. If not, then at least it would amuse them to point out whenever I am close to or have already broken my resolutions. 😛 So here goes…

1) Pick up a new skill – Masters/musical instrument/new language/cooking/baking/dancing/sewing, etc.

2) Be more active in sports (at least twice a week) – swimming/gymming/badminton

3) Be game to new experiences and meeting new people

4) Be more open/candid and be more trusting

5) Read more news especially that which is business-related

Any resolutions of your own that you’d like to share? Or perhaps suggest to me? Your feedback would be most welcomed! Haven’t heard from you guys in ages.

On a personal note, here’s to a rocking 2009, friends! One that will hopefully be filled with more ups than downs…and of sufficient $$$ to vacation with friends both in and outside of Malaysia as well as the imminent weddings of old friends (ahem…you know who you are!). Have a great start to the new year!
