Utada Hikaru April 25, 2009

Back in the day when J-pop (Japanese pop) took Malaysia by storm, I was one of the few people who was somehow spared from the mania. Although I wasn’t in to J-pop, nevertheless, I did know who Utada Hikaru was which is says something about her (because apparently, I have this ability to crawl under the biggest rocks and be completely ignorant of a lot of things). She was the Britney Spears of Japan and her biggest singles (back then) were First Love and Automatic.

Since the J-pop tide receded, I hadn’t heard much of her. So imagine my surprise yesterday when, as I was blogging and listening to Mix FM last Saturday afternoon, the name ‘Utada Hikaru’ popped up over the radio…and surprise, surprise, the song that followed was in English.

I thought the lyrics were refreshing and just slightly poetic. Oh, and the dramatic beginning was a nice touch! Anyway, I couldn’t locate the original video clip, because apparently she released this single digitally over iTunes.

So…for your viewing pleasure, here is Utada (she goes by her first name now), singing ‘Come Back To Me’.

From my brief search on Youtube, I gather she’s trying to break into the US market. And judging by the numerous cover videos uploaded on Youtube so far, she seems to be on good footing!

Feck April 22, 2009

Feck, feck, feck, feck, feck.

That’s my mantra after spending the entire morning getting ready for a big presentation with the BIG boss…only to get cut off because the other departments before us obviously do not know the meaning of time management!

I can’t decide what pisses me off more – that my projects, while always considered important enough for everyone to want to know what’s cooking (hence the NUMEROUS letters, memos, information notes to both internal and external parties), never seem to move ANYWHERE – or the wishy-washy answers of the coordinator of this high level meeting, resulting in not only me wasting my entire morning…but also 6 other higher ranking team members, one of whom is the nicest, most gracious, eloquent woman I have ever met in my limited working experience, had to (presumably) make a mad 15-minute drive over.

My only option for zen-ness during this fecking time? To take ALL of the papers on my desk – all the analysis writeups, letters, memos, tables, slides, charts, even those yellow Post-Its with important reminders – and letting the resident shredding machine have its way with it!

But since nothing is ideal in life, I’ll settle for blasting some feck-you-all rock song all this afternoon (hopefully I don’t break into a sing-and-dance routine cause you know I’m feeling the passion right now).

Any suggestions?

Muscle Cars That I’d Drive! April 20, 2009

2001 Honda S2000 (from 2 Fast 2 Furious)

hondas2000-copy

A lot of passive-aggressive action going on here. I love it that it’s so girly (paintwork and upholstery) and yet it packs such a punch (the fact that its a roadster convertible with killer rims)!

2007 Tjaarda Mustang

There’s something about the roar of the engine of a Mustang that I can’t shake off. A bit bulky compared to the others that have made my list, but it kind of has the Dodge-Camaro-BMW thing going on. Luxury car meets muscle. I like!

2002 Honda Acura NSX

Blink and you’ll miss this beautiful car in the latest installment of the series, called Fast & Furious. My brother tells me this is one of the top-rated sports car. I just adore its super sexy sleek look!

Although I’m a stickler for details, I’ve left out the specifications of these beauties cause…really, it’s all alien to me. As a person who knows nuts about cars (only a couple of weeks ago, I just learnt what a ‘thread mark’ is and deciphered tyre dimensions), I’m quite satisfied have such a list guided purely by my sense of sight. To borrow a line from Dominic Torretto of Fast & Furious, “I’m a boy who appreciates a good body…regardless of make.”

Well…OK. Make that a girl who appreciates a good body…although she has squat knowledge on make. *WInK!*

(I was inspired to make this entry after watching Fast & Furious. Watch it for the awesome cars and cool stunts…cause frankly, the plot is riddled with holes, the hot women make minimal appearance – unless you count those stupid 2D skimpily dressed women on the monitors that flag off the race – AND the two dashing lead men need to be cleaned up and made up better.)

Pick up any beauty magazine and the first thing you will notice is how flawless every single person in it is. No matter that each photo is shot by amazing photographers using above average beauties dressed in sophisticated clothes who are perfected by professional make up artists. The eyes of each model sparkle, the hair shines, the skin is smooth and glowing and the body perfect.

Actually…what a perfect bunch of photoshopped lies.

Logic will tell you that no one, and I mean no one, not even celebrities who spend tonnes of time and money working out, look that perfect. Case in point, the recent slip-ups by magazines in posting up authentic photos of Jessica Alba and Kim Kardashian taken during a magazine photoshoot. If the sentence sounds odd (something authentic is a mistake?) or if idea of it sounds stupid to you…that’s because it is.

So, when I read this blog post about Elle magazine’s French edition featuring on its COVER, celebrities without makeup/airbrushing/photoshopping or ‘stars sans fards’ I thought it was an awesome idea. I don’t know what the cosmetic brands who bought ad space in French Elle make of this (I can imagine all the brouhaha at the advertisement office), but looking at the leaked covers, I think the cover girls, Monica Bellucci, Eva Herzigova and Sophie Marceau – women well over their mid-30s – are naturally quite striking (so it’s true what I’ve heard from photographers, perfect lighting is key). Don’t you agree?

As my brother observed, while everyone can look good with some makeup, the real challenge is to look beautiful naturally. He will also tell you the invention that had been of the greatest disservice to the male species would be makeup.

Isn’t it strange that people covet original property, but never seem to value it in other people? >_<  So for that, French Elle…I say, keep up the good work!

Pottering April 12, 2009

Since we moved into our ‘new’ old house (same lot but significantly renovated till it might as well be considered a new house), my family and I have pretty much neglected the few surviving potted plants that make up our garden. Naturally, after 14 months of being left on their own, our plants were in dire need of being weeded, trimmed, repotted and fertilised. Here is one of three bonsai trees my family owns.

AFTER

What a difference, huh?

Anyway, 8 ceramic and 4 small plastic pots, a washed up porch, 2 cleaned dogs (yes…for the temporary moment, I have 2 dogs in my house, but that’s for another entry) and 7 hours later, I’m glad to announce that my family house looks much neater from the outside.

As for my room…hmmm…here’s hoping inspiration will strike again! 😀

Writing Well April 4, 2009

It was on a lazy Sunday afternoon, a couple of months ago during the Chinese New Year, that I came across an article by Dzoff Azmi in the Star newspaper. He was relating his experience teaching people how to write a television script and two points stood out.

1) Writing is less about “free and open creativity” and more about “hard work and structure”.

2) Writing is easy, writing well is hard.

Dzoff’s argument to this is simple. Writing is essentially about conveying a point, but because the product is only as good as its producer, to write well the writer must do so in a way that is honest to himself/herself. And because of the level of passion in writing, there is always the danger of ‘falling in love with your own words’ enough to dilute a paragraph expressly to slot in a clever phrase.

Although I found Dzoff’s points spot-on, if it wasn’t for that publishing project that just passed, I wouldn’t have appreciated his points as much as I do now. Although it was far and few in between, the amendments undertaken to the drafts that came to my colleague and I (who were the coordinators) were nonetheless necessary. Even one word made a mountain of difference to the flow of the sentence, or in some cases, brought an angle to it. I was thoroughly pleased, and deeply disconcerted.

Pleased because I now have an appreciation for detail in corporate writing, which I find to be the driest form of communication out there. Ironic, since that is basically what I do, day in and day out – reports, memos, notes, minutes, etc.

Disconcerted because while this appreciation for words is has been lacking in most of us in the office, my three younger colleagues – ones who are my brother’s age nonetheless, scholars of the insitution I work for and  graduates of London School of Economics and Warwick University – have been discriminate about, judging from the office conversation we had in the dead of the night as we consolidated our points. It certainly takes your ego down a notch or two when you learn something, not matter how intangible, from people with less than half your working experience.

So now, I pay more attention to the words I use, that depending on the rest of the sentence, give markedly different tones and therefore convey a whole new meaning i.e. ‘disbursement’ vs. ‘payment’, ‘it has come to our attention’ vs. ‘we understand’, ‘endorsement’ vs. ‘approval’

And I hope to translate that appreciation to my blogging too. It’ll certainly require more time and effort on my part and perhaps might mean lesser entries in between…save for the impromptu entires (like yesterday). So hope you’ll bear with me as I  begin my quest to write well.

Of Fridays, Autobots, Decepticons and Constructions… April 3, 2009

I got so excited over this, I HAD to make quickie post before work officially begins in…oh, 5 minutes. Just came across this blog entry by Matt McDaniel at Yahoo! Movies. Paramount Pictures, the studio financing the eagerly anticipated (at least, for me) sequel to Transformers, has released a list of robots who will appear in the movie, including a brief description.

AUTOBOTS
OPTIMUS PRIME: The Autobots’ leader – Peterbilt truck.
IRONHIDE: Weapons specialist – GMC Topkick.
RATCHET: Medic – Hummer H2.
BUMBLEBEE: Friend and mode of transportation for Sam Witwicky  – 2010 Chevrolet Camaro.
ARCEE: A female Autobot – motorcycle.
SIDESWIPE: A Lamborghini in the toy line, here he transforms into a silver Corvette Stingray concept car.
JETFIRE: An older Decepticon who switches sides – SR71 Blackbird jet.
JOLT: The original toy was a Decepticon, but in the movie he\’s a good guy – Chevrolet Volt plug-in hybrid.
SKID & MUDFLAP: a.k.a. \”The Twins\” – Chevrolet Beat and Trax concept cars.

DECEPTICONS
STARSCREAM: Formerly Megatron\’s second in command, he escaped at the end of the first movie; F-22 Raptor jet.
SCORPONOK: The mechanical scorpion that attacked the American troops in the desert.
THE FALLEN: One of the original Transformers, he\’s called \”the most elemental bad guy” by the screenwriters.
SIDEWAYS: The Audi R8 seen crashing through a building in the trailer.
SOUNDWAVE: A cassette player in the original toys; his alternate mode will be a communications satellite.
RAVAGE: A four-legged, cat-like robot.
THE DOCTOR: A spider-like crawling robot.
WHEELIE: A small, radio-controlled truck.
DEMOLISHER: One of the Constructicons that transform into construction vehicles.
DEVASTATOR: A giant robot formed by the Constructicons joining together; individually, they are: Scavenger, Scrapper, Hightower, Longhaul, Rampage, Overload and Mixmaster.

I’m so psyched that I was right in deciphering the trailer….it was the amazing Constructicons! Pardon the sci-fic geek in me, but…what a good way to start a Friday…TGIF!
